I know that hair is often divided into different parts when coloring it: roots, mid-lengths and ends. I heard that each section requires different processing time. How do I know which section, and how long it takes to process the color? It seems so complicated!
Think of your hair in 3 sections: roots (new hair growth), mid-lengths, and ends (about an inch or two up from the bottom of your hair). The hair color processes in these sections are different. Of course, if you only touch your roots, you don’t need to apply the color to the entire head of hair. In fact, you shouldn’t put color on your mid-lengths and ends every time you color because it can cause it to look dark and dull. But if you are coloring your hair for the first time, or changing the shade of your hair color, you need to apply the color to different sections of your hair with different processing times.
Oily Scalp, Dry Ends: Hair Care & Product Tips (updated 2022)
Always start with your roots (unless your hair is lightened the first time), If you are covering gray roots, the color needs more time to process. But even if you don’t have gray hair, the hair at your roots is new growth, and it takes a little time. It’s a good idea to give your roots as much time as possible to absorb the color—at least 10 minutes head start, 20 minutes if you have stubborn gray in your roots. But please remember that you don’t need to apply color every time you color (see above).
Your mid-length hair has more sun exposure and environmental stress, not to mention heat styling, and more. Mid-length hair is slightly more porous, which means the hair shaft is more open to receiving color than your roots. If you are coloring for the first time, or changing your shade, after you allow your roots to process, gently comb your hair color, add more color to the mid-lengths and finish if necessary. If you are re-dying your hair to the same shade, apply the permanent color only to your roots. If you think your mid-lengths and ends need a color refresh, use a gloss to enhance color and add intense shine.
The ends of your hair are already there for the most part, which means they accept color easily and don’t require a lot of processing time. Pull the color to your ends only when you finish saturating the roots and mid-lengths, and when you dye for the first time or change your shade.
